Queer migration in the mirror of history

A look behind the scenes of the DOMiD archive

13 Oktober 2020 @ 6:00 am 7:30 pm

The Documentation Center and Museum of Migration in Germany (DOMiD) was founded in 1990 by migrants. Over the past 30 years, a collection of documents, everyday objects, photos, and films that is unique in Germany has been collected and deals with the history of migration in Germany. As an archive that was created “from the bottom up, the stories of immigrants and refugees, the founding members of DOMiD included, play a central role. The stories behind the objects paint a diverse picture of the history of Germany, in which migrants have played an active role from the start. Germany was, for centuries, primarily a country of emigration. This changed at the end of the 19th century. The motives were and are varied: whether for educational reasons, for protection against religious or state persecution, out of love and attraction to a person or due to economic hardship, the flight from war or the hope of a better life: mobility has profoundly impacted today’s society. LGBTIQ people constitute an important part of this movement. So far, only few testimonies of queer biographies have been preserved in the DOMiD archive. With the establishment of the central migration museum in Germany, which DOMiD will open in Cologne-Kalk in 2025, this gap in the collection will gradually be filled. With a queer look at the history of migration, DOMiD employees lead through the archive and are available for discussion afterwards.
